Trading Cards

Rare trading cards often go way up in value after only a few years. Here's how to invest in trading cards and make a mint.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Be smart about how you buy trading cards. Don't buy them by the pack - buy them by the case. And don't buy them at stores - buy them online, where it is usually cheaper, or on online auction websites. If you are serious about trying to invest in trading cards, perhaps buy up top cards from private individuals.

  2. Step 2

Don't play with the cards. Keep them safe to preserve their value. Alternatively, don't even open up the packs. Save them and sell them later. Generally, 3-5 years after a limited edition set of cards from a still popular card game have gone out of print, unopened packs will go for 2 to 3 times their original retail prices. Buying them by the case only increases this profit margin. Remember to store them in a dark, dry place to precent moisture damage.

  3. Step 3

In general, there will always be a market for certain kinds of cards, though their value as an investment, like any other, goes up and down. Certain magazines, like Skrye, keeps track of that value. Generally, though, you won't see any real gains until a particular kind of card set goes out of print, so at least wait 2 years before you try to sell.

Tips & Warnings
  • Magic Cards and Pokemon Cards are two types of trading cards to invest in.
