Things You'll Need:
- Drill, whole saw bits, Phillips bit.
-
Step 1
Read the instructions on the lock package for installment all lock sets are different. Some locks have pieces that are so small you may need to see the diagram to locate where to install them.
-
Step 2
If the door you are installing the lock on does not have a whole you will have to make one first. Using a pencil mark your center point 2 1/2 inches in unless the installment specifies a different depth. This measurement is for the depth of the bolt or toggle. You can set locks and door handles at any desired height. Drill out your lock whole with a 3 inch Whole bit. Be sure to use a pilot bit or it will never work.
-
Step 3
Next change your drill bit to a 1 inch paddle bit so you can drill a guiding hole in the side of the door. You want the center of this whole to be center with the whole you just drilled. Being off center just a little bit will make for tight toggling of the lock.
-
Step 4
Use this same bit to drill an adjacent whole in the door casing. This whole can be shallow about 1, 2 inches. If necessary use a chisel to clean up the edges so it will receive the bolt lock.
-
Step 5
Assembling the lock can be frustrating but this is the part where I hope you read the instructions. Insert your cylinder into your side whole and screw it in place. Insert door handles or bolt toggles into the cylinder. Make sure it locks and unlocks before screwing in to place. Make any necessary adjustments. They should toggle freely not tight and hard to turn.
-
Step 6
Install cover plates and strike plates on the door and the casing. Make sure the door latches in the closed position. If doors close tightly you may have to take off the strike plates and recess them by cutting a mortise so that they seat flush with surface of the door or casing.
