Picking the right pool cue will improve your pool game. Pool is a game of skill. Without skill or luck when picking a cue stick, your chances of losing are increased.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

99% of pool cues weigh between 12 and 22 ounces and have a length ranging between 48 to 60 inches. (The shorter and lighter jump cue is a different story). It has been proven that world class play can be done with cue sticks weighing anywhere from 15 ounces to 22 ounces.

  2. Step 2

When picking the best pool cue for a child, look for a cue 48 to 56 inches in length, and 12 to 18 ounces in weight. For adults, cues 55 to 58 inches in length, unless very long arms are involved, and 15 to 22 ounces in weight should suffice.

  3. Step 3

The diameter of cue shafts usually range between 11 and 13.5 milimeters. Most players use a shaft between 12 and 13 milimeters.

  4. Step 4

When selecting a house cue off of the rack, look at the cue tip. If the tip is no thicker than a dime, it should be removed and retipped. Roll the stick or sticks, you've chosen to pick from, on the pool table to check for crookedness. (It's hard to play consistent pool with a warped stick).

Tips & Warnings
  • When searching for a good house cue at the weight you prefer, most light colored cue sticks are lighter than the darker ones.
