Times are tough and repairmen are REALLY expensive. So I learned to do some repairs myself and have been amazed at how easy it is. Here is how to repair an air conditioner yourself.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • screwdrivers
  • vacuum
  • soft brush
  1. 1

First determine what is wrong with the central air conditioner and is there a chance to fix it. If the air conditioner just doesn't cool, doesn't turn on, squeaks, leaks liquid, or is noisy you may be able to fix it. In this e-how I give the first steps if it turns on but does not cool. If anything else is wrong please check out my other articles on how to repair other air conditioner problems.

  2. 2

If the air conditioner just does not cool, but it does warm check the instruction manual. Many times they will give you ideas on how to fix it yourself. Try what the manual suggests. If that doesn't work follow the following. Turn off the power to the unit (there is typically a shut-off or disconnect panel near the compressor. If you can't find the shut-off then go you your circuit breaker and turn off the power the the unit that way.

  3. 3

Now rake all the leaves and debris away from the unit. Remove any type of grille or cover over the condenser and use a soft brush (such as a roller hair brush) to clean dirt and gunk on the fins. Next grab your vacuum and get the car attachment and use it to vacuum the fins.

  4. 4

Now unscrew and remove the grille (thing on the top of the unit) if possible and vacuum it, being careful not to disrupt wiring or break anything. If you read in the instruction to lubricate you would do this now.

  5. 5

Now put everything back together, turn the power on, and turn on the air conditioner. Let it run 5 minutes and then feel the pipes (one should be warm and the second should be cool. If it isn't you may, unfortunately, need to call a specialist.
