Everyone seems so busy these days just trying to keep up with our multiple obligations. As a result, we spend so much time in our cars that they're almost a second home. It's important to make that time in the car as safe as possible. Unfortunately, the world can also be a dangerous place. Crimes such as car jacking are frequently not random. Many car jacking victims were targeted by criminals looking for easy targets. Avoid being a target! By practicing some simple safety tips in and around you car you and your family can avoid being car jacked.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The steps to avoid being car jacked are simple. Lock your vehicle no matter how long you think you're errand will take. Resist the temptation of leaving your car running while locking the doors with your keyless remote. Car theft occurs daily; don't make it any easier for the thieves. When you're in your car it's prudent to always leave your doors locked. Having your car stolen is expensive and inconvenient; however, being car jacked is utterly terrifying. People have been killed while being car jacked. If a criminal has difficulty gaining access to your vehicle they likely will move on to an easier target and you'll avoid being car jacked. Many cars allow you to program your doors to lock automatically after you enter.

  2. Step 2

Don't allow yourself to be distracted in the car. Pay particular attention to your environment when you are stopped at a traffic light or stop sign. Car jackings occur when vehicles are motionless. Criminals will target individuals oblivious to them and their surroundings. Pay attention to avoid being car jacked.

  3. Step 3

To avoid being car jacked wait until you're somewhere safe before you make that cell phone call or send that text message. Contrary to what you believe, criminals every day may be watching you to determine whether you're an easy target or not. Routine cell phone use in the car suggests that you are probably careless and unaware.

  4. Step 4

Avoid having any identification on your key ring. Sure it could help some good Samaritan to return your lost keys to you; unfortunately, it could also help a criminal locate and steal your car. They may also potentially burglarize your home.

  5. Step 5

Avoid hitchhikers! You've seen enough teen-slasher horror flicks haven't you? Let them keep walking and you'll avoid being car jacked.

  6. Step 6

Be very careful about parking lots and enclosed garages particularly in the evening. Try to travel in groups using a route that you're familiar with. Park in well-lit areas with the greatest access to escape routes and car volume. Remain vigilant. Have your car key and remote ready. Remember that your car key can be used as a weapon against an attackers eyes if necessary. Steps to avoid getting car jacked focus on not looking helpless.

  7. Step 7

Keep all packages and valuables in the trunk. Thieves can't steal what they can't see. If a parking attendant parks your car leave only the valet key so no one can access your trunk. Absolutely do not leave your entire key ring. Criminals want to maximize their time. Stealing a car containing bags of merchandise is a jack pot. By reducing your risk for car theft you also help avoid being car jacked.

  8. Step 8

Be organized with your auto information. Keep your Vehicle Identification Number in a secure location with other relevant information about your vehicle including model, make, year, and color. Lastly include your auto insurance policy number and contact phone numbers.

  9. Step 9

Car jackings are dangerous, but fortunately very avoidable. These common sense steps will help you avoid getting car jacked and keep you safer in and around your car. Being busy is no excuse for not being prepared. Stay safe, and don't be a statistic.
