How to Discover Your Hidden Talents

With busy school and work schedules, it's easy to get caught up in mundane tasks -- and thus, forget about any hidden talents lurking inside you. Tuning in to these talents, however, can open up a world of new hobbies, careers and friends.

Things You'll Need

  • an open mind
  • a will to expand yourself
  • Explore your family history and what talents your family members have acquired. Reminisce back to your childhood. Are there artists, photographers, songwriters, authors or musicians in your ancestry? Talents tend to run in families, and knowing what's in your "talent gene" can spark a new direction for you.

  • Think back to your childhood of things that you were interested in or excelled at. Childhood is where many people are introduced to a variety of activities or class subjects requiring a certain talent or skill. If you've put them aside for a long time, now might be the time to resurrect your childhood talents.

  • Think about what interests you today. It will be like a tiny spark of an idea. It may not be very big at first but it is something that you may feel drawn to deep down in your soul. Or it could simply be something you're talented at where you work. Write down any ideas that you come up with that you may want to pursue. Nothing is written in stone, so if you try something and don't like it, you can just move on and try the next thing on your list.

  • Once you have found that talent that has never surfaced before completely, or has been hidden for so long you forgot about it, pursue it with all your heart. It will bring you so much pleasure and it may help you through the roughest time in your life one day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Everyone has a talent or skill that can be developed.
  • Ask your friends and family for an objective view of your strengths. Maybe they notice something in you that you can't see.
  • If you don't at least try a new hobby, you will never know.
  • Don't compare your own talents and skills to others. Everyone has something to offer on different levels, so don't let what other people do stop you.
