Part of maintaining one's professional status or certification in therapeutic fields is keeping up with the latest trends, which means continuing education. However, getting the required amount of continuing education units (CEUs) without paying a fortune out of pocket is both necessary and difficult in these poor economic times. Fortunately, there are a few ways to get CEUs for free.
Things You'll Need
Some websites specialize in offering free CEUs. Freeceus.angtherapist.com, in particular, is a good site to find free PT/OT/SLP online continuing education courses. The author has a blog put up so free CEU classes can be shared among readers. The site also offers an option to sign up for emails to be alerted when new classes are posted.
If you are a licensed professional -- social worker, SLP/AUD, registered dietitian, physical therapist, occupational therapist, nurse or massage therapist -- you can take a free 1-credit demo class from Care2Learn at www.care2learn.com. Care2Learn also has CEUs for purchase.
Another resource offering free CEUs for occupational therapists or physical therapists is www.TodayinOT.com and www.TodayinPT.com. Each month, a free sponsored CEU course is available to take online. Classes must be taken within a specified time frame; otherwise, there is a small fee per class. Today in OT or Today in PT also offers a free monthly publication for practitioners as well.
Super Duper Publications and SpeechPathology.com invite speech therapists to take selected CEU courses for free on Super Duper's website at www.superduperinc.com. Once on the site, search for "free CEUs."
Advance Magazine -- a publication for physical, occupational and speech therapists -- holds job fairs in selected cities around the U.S. The job fairs also have free CEU opportunities for practitioners, as well as other perks, such as prizes. Visit the main company page for details and to be directed to your discipline-specific website at www.advanceweb.com. They also offer a free monthly publication for practitioners.
Interactive Metronome welcomes OT/COTAs, SLP/SLPAs and PT/PTAs to try several free one-credit introductory courses done in self-study or Web seminar formats. Go to the website for more information at www.interactivemetronome.com.
OnlineCE offers a free hour of CE credit. Visit www.OnlineCE.com and click your specific discipline.
If you are willing to volunteer your time, you can also get free CEUs by educating a student from a local college studying to be a practitioner. See your governing body for more information on how to obtain CEUs through student education.
