Celebrate Easter like an American-Norwegian this Spring
Celebrate Easter like an American-Norwegian this Spring

American-Norwegians are a strange bunch. In our family, we have several Easter traditions. We blend Norwegian tradition with American. Somewhere in the hoopla, we have forgotten the resurrection but osh-gosh be gosh we have fun!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, we are American's, so dye some eggs. If you are a norske family, try making some Norwegian flag and American flag eggs.

  2. Step 2

When you're done coloring eggs, have a run of the mill Easter egg hunt. Have each child pick out her least favorite egg, and go Easter Egg Knocking. What's that you say? It's a Norwegian game, where each child takes his egg, and attempts to smash the egg of the other kids. Us Norwegian Americans are not known for our smarts, but it sure is fun to watch! Also, each time you smash an egg, or even if you win, make sure to shout "Uff da!" It's alright if you don't know what that means. We don't either.

  3. Step 3

With your traditional Easter dinner, serve Lefse. Lefse is a traditional Norwegian treat that is present at all family functions. Basically, it's a potato tortilla. The best thing is, lefse goes with sweet deserts as well as it goes with a good meal. Lefse recipes are widely available. Make sure to use a lefse stick, and make your lefse as thin as possible or all of your relatives will laugh at you! Uff da!

Tips & Warnings
  • Have fun with your Norwegian heritage! We have lots of strange words and customs that make us unique. Follow the above steps and everyone is sure to have a "bra tid" (means fine time, sounds like bra tit, see how fun we are!)
