System Restore is a tool in Windows XP that allows you to return your computer to an earlier state if you have a major problem or failure.

One of the key features of System Restore is that you do not lose any user files. Windows only restores the state of the operating system, but does not revert files back to the date you choose.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator for the computer. Also make sure you have all other programs closed prior to running System Restore.

  2. Step 2

Select START --> ALL PROGRAMS --> ACCESSORIES --> SYSTEM TOOLS --> SYSTEM RESTORE.

  3. Step 3

A welcome screen will appear. Select RESTORE MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME and click NEXT.

  4. Step 4

The System Restore calendar will appear. Select a date from the calendar that you would like to revert back to. After making the selection, click NEXT.

  5. Step 5

Verify your selection on the Confirm Restore Point Selection page and click NEXT.

  6. Step 6

The computer should shut down automatically and reboot. After rebooting your computer, you will see a Restoration Complete window. Click OK.

  7. Step 7

Now review your system stability. If you are unsatisfied with your system restore, you can open the wizard again by following the steps above. You will then have the option to undo the system restore you just completed or select another system restore date.

Tips & Warnings
  • If System Restore does not work in normal Windows mode, try it in safe mode.
