Need a sandbag in a hurry? Sandbags can be used to stop the flow of water onto your property and/or into your home. Although there may be a local agency giving away sandbags, the supply will be limited. It is wise to be prepared to make your own sandbags. Purchasing ready-made sandbags can be costly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sandbag, pillowcase, or laundry bag
  • builders sand
  1. Step 1

Get sandbags. In an emergency, when sandbags aren't available, you can use pillowcases, laundry bags or something similar.

  2. Step 2

Fill your sandbag 3/4 full with sand. Sand can be purchased at your local DIY store. If you are preparing in advance for anticipated flooding, you can order builders sand online from most major chain stores. In an absolute emergency, soil can be used to fill the bags. If you use soil be sure that it is compacted real tight. If there are any gaps or air pockets in the soil, water will get through.

  3. Step 3

Fold the open side of the bag under. It is very important that you are sure the bag is folded tight and secure. If water gets in, it could compromise your whole stack.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the above until you have all of the sandbags you need.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to do this with at least one other person. The bags are heavy and this is a lot quicker!
