Dog bites are a common thing in this world today. Most dog bites can be prevented or avoided. It is the small thing a person can do when coming in contact with a dog that can prevent a dog bite

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good common sense
  1. Step 1

    Never run away from a dog.
    Never tease a dog.
    Never stare at a dog.
    How you can prevent dog bites.
    Never pretend to fight or play rough with a dog.
    Do not hug a dog, another words do not grab a dog and around the neck and try to squeeze him.
    Do not throw things at a dog.
    do not yell at a dog.

  2. Step 2

    Stay away or avoid dogs that are.
    A working type dog like seeing eye or a police dog.
    That are inside a fence, or a car for that matter.
    Avoid dogs that are sleeping, chewing on a bone, toy, or eating.
    Especially avoid a dog that is injured.
    Avoid a dog that has puppy's and is nursing.
    Always make sure a dog has an adult person with it before approaching.
    If a dog seems to be mad or unfriendly do not approach.

  3. Step 3

    Manners means everything.
    Get permission.
    Always ask the owner of a dog if you can approach or pet a dog. they know better than anyone the temperament of the dog.
    After you get permission ,first let the dog sniff your closed hand, with a very slow motions pet the dog on the side of the neck. Do not pet the dog on the top of the head.
    then slowly pet the dog on the side of the neck, stay away from the top of the head.
    Do not what so ever offer a dog food with out permission.

  4. Step 4

    What should I do if?
    a strange dog approaches me while I am just standing there?
    Stand very still almost like a tree.
    Be straight and keep your feet together.
    Ball your fist up and place them under your chin.
    and absolutely do not stare into the eyes of the dog approaching you.

  5. Step 5

    If your laying down and a dog approaches you...
    Lay very still like a log.
    Keep your face down and feet together.
    Make your hands into a fist and place behind your head.
    Take your forearms and place over your ears.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can always ask your vet for tips on what or how to handle a strange dog.

on 4/26/2009 I'm not so sure about step 4 what does putting your fist under you chin do? All I know is if the dog looks like it is going to attack I get ready.

on 3/28/2009 I tried step 4 before and it somewhat worked but I still got scratched all over. I suggest just run(if you can) and punch or kick it... sorry but it's true.
