Celebrate A Deceased Parent's Birthday

My father passed away on December 15th. His birthday rolled around on February 22. I would prefer to celebrate the day he was brought into the world, rather than the day he left it. If you choose, you can celebrate your deceased parent's birthday, too.

Things You'll Need

  • Birthday card
  • Helium balloons

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a favorite location of your deceased parent. For me, my father loved the beach, particularly a place where he could watch the boats and seagulls sail past.

    • 2

Go alone or if you can, gather your family and make a trip to that favorite location on said birthday. It can be difficult, but like the Irish tradition, try to focus on the deceased's life, his victories, his humor -- a celebration rather than a lament.

Like I had every year previous, I bought a Happy Birthday card for my father, wrote a message meant only for him and brought it with me.

Attach your card to some helium balloons. Wish your parent a happy birthday and send your card and balloons into the sky with whatever wishes you find appropriate.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can visit the cemetery as well, but my father was cremated and doesn't have a permanent place of rest.
