How to Become a PMI Certified PMP--Project Management Professional
PMI (the Project Management Institute) offers several credentials for business people who oversee complex projects and lead developments teams. One such credential is the Project Manager Certification. As a PMI certified Project Management Professional (PMP), you will be well trained to direct teams under tight budgeting and scheduling constraints.
To apply for PMI PMP certification, follow these steps so you can find the right training and meet all the requirements.

Visit the website of PMI to see an overview of the application process. There are two routes to becoming a certified PMP. (1), Have a high school diploma or GED, 60 months experience leading projects teams, and 35 hours of project management education. Or (2), have a bachelors degree, 36 months experience leading projects teams, and 35 hours of project management education.

Make sure your experience as a projects team leader is well-documented. PMP certification can be obtained by anyone, in any field--from advertising to construction, or even scientific research.

Complete the necessary course work. To qualify for PMI certification, you must accrue 35 hours of project management instruction, and they can be from live classes, online classes, or special training programs organized by your company. In order for the class hours to count, they must cover aspects of project management--scope, budget, scheduling, communication, etc.

The website of PMI has a course and conference locator. Use it to find classes that count toward your PMP certification. You can search by location, or area of specialty. If you choose to take classes online or at a college, check with PMI to make sure they are acceptable. Remember, self-study activities, such as reading PMP manuals, do not count.

Once your application has been approved, you will be give authorization to take the PMP exam. Make sure to study well so that you can pass this timed, multiple-choice exam.

Once you pass the PMP exam, your Project Manager Certification is complete! To maintain your credential during it's 3 year validity period, you must also complete 60 hours of continuing education credits. Don't forget to stay on top of these PMI requirements.
