Experts say that job scams increase during tough economic times because so many people become desperate to find jobs. The Internet especially has become inundated with phony job scams. Although most employment boards have security in place to screen out potential malicious employment ads, many scammers still find ways to post job scams. Follow the steps below to avoid job scams.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To avoid job scams, steer clear from employment ads that lack details about the position and the company. Employment ads that offer a large salary or a wide range of high salaries should also be a red flag for job searchers. If a position seems too good to be true, it's probably a job scam.

  2. Step 2

Never give out your personal information or pay any upfront fees to avoid job scams. Many people have had their identity stolen or have lost money paying for job application fees and background checks. A reputable company will not ask for your credit card number, or bank account information. Be wary of any employment ads that link to another website requesting personal information.

  3. Step 3

Change your resume a little to avoid job scams. Use initials instead of your full name. Use a post office box address instead of an actual residental address. Get another email account for job hunting contacts, so your main e-mail address will not be inundated with spam e-mails.

  4. Step 4

If you are asked to meet with someone for a job interview, make sure it's not a job scam to sell you something. Check out the company's website, and check out the company with the Better Business Bureau at BBB.org. Many people have wasted time and gas going to a job interview only to find out it was a ruse to sell them job-finding services or educational employment tools.

on 4/13/2009 Great info on how to avoid job scams, especially the ones that charge up front fees. I have many friends who have been caught up in that type of scam.
