How to Test for a Leaking Toilet

Save

If you think your water bill is higher than normal, your toilet might be leaking. According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, a leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water daily. You don't have to call a plumber to determine if you have a leak. Just go into your pantry and grab a bottle of food coloring.

  • Take the lid off toilet tank. Place it in a spot where it won't get knocked off and break.

  • Squeeze a few drops of food coloring in the water inside the tank. Wait for 30 minutes. Don't use or flush the toilet during this time.

  • Check the water in the toilet bowl. If the water is the color of the food dye you used, you have a leak in the tank. The flapper probably needs to be replaced.

  • Check the floor around the base of the toilet. If there is dyed water on the floor, you probably have a leak in the wax ring and it needs to be replaced.
