Google Maps Pedometer is a great resource for runners. It's an absolutely free service that helps you plan your routes, calculate miles and keep track of your calories burned.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the website http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ This is a Google sponsored website. You can either type in an address like you would for Google Maps, or you can click on a location and zoom in.

  2. Step 2

Once you have your starting point, zoom in close so you can see all the individual streets. You can choose several different views at the top right hand side of the map. If you're sticking to streets, I would recommend the map view. If you're using a system of trails, try the satellite view.

  3. Step 3

Hit "Start Recording" on the left hand side. This is how you will make your trail. Google Maps Pedometer will keep track of the distance. Simply click once for a starting point, then click another point on the map to advance the red line. Keep clicking new points until you've planned out your run.

  4. Step 4

The best way to plan out your run is by distance. You can keep track of that on the left hand side of Google Maps Pedometer. It will keep track of the distance in miles. Keep in mind that once you plan a route out, you can either do a "there and back" run, meaning you run the same route back, or you can plan a different route back. "There and back" is the easiest to plan.

  5. Step 5

Feel free to turn on the "calorie counter" on the left hand side menu. You'll be prompted to put in your weight. This will be helpful if you're running to lose weight, or so you can know how much to eat before or after a run.

  6. Step 6

If you're not familiar with the area, print the map and take it with you on your run. It's not the absolute most comfortable thing to carry, but can be exceedingly helpful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make sure to stay well hydrated while running.
