All women over the age of 20 should perform a monthly breast self exam. This will allow them to become familiar with their breast and make it more likely for them to notice any subtle yet potentially serious changes. Read below for tips on how to perform a breast self exam.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by inspecting your breasts. Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your side and scan your breasts for any suspicious activity such as puckering, dimpling or swelling. Repeat with your hands on your hips and one again with your hands raised above your head.

  2. Step 2

Next check your breasts for lumps or masses. It is generally advised to do this while lying down or in the shower. Use the pads of your fingers to examine your breasts in a circular motion. Start at the outside and work your way in...also make sure to check your armpit.

  3. Step 3

Move on to your nipple. Gently squeeze each nipple between your right index finger and thumb and look for any discharge.

  4. Step 4

If you notice a new lump, tenderness, change in your breasts or have a fluid or blooding discharge, contact your doctor immediately to run more tests.
