Our Old Kitchen

A new kitchen is one of the most expensive projects a homeowner will make. Refacing kitchen cabinets will greatly reduce kitchen remodeling costs and give your kitchen a new updated look.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You will need to evaluate your old kitchen cabinets. If your old kitchen cabinets are not in good shape structurally, it is not a good idea to reface your cabinets. Refacing kitchen cabinets is generally reserved for those cabinets that are solid and only need new cabinet doors, door hinges and kitchen cabinet knobs. Some cabinet refacers will be able to repair minor damage while other cabinet refacers and do it yourself types cannot repair any damaged cabinets.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether or not you will be able to do the kitchen cabinet refacing job on your own or if you will need to hire a professional.

  3. Step 3

If you have decided to do the refacing job yourself, simply measure your kitchen cabinet doors and order your cabinet doors online or in your local home repair shop such as Sears, Home Depot or Lowes.

During this time it is also a good idea to purchase your kitchen cabinet hardware. Remember you will need hinges and door knobs. Be sure that your cabinets come complete with templates for drilling holes in the cabinet doors. Many people doing kitchen remodeling on their own do not realize that cabinets do not come complete with pre-drilled holes for hardware.

Doing it yourself gets more complicated as you think about painting kitchen cabinets or staining kitchen cabinets. If your cabinet boxes will show, this becomes especially complicated.

  4. Step 4

If you have decided to leave the job to the professionals, many hardware stores such as Lowes, Home Depot and Sears have professionals that will come to your home and take measurements free of charge.

In the hardware store, they will show you samples of kitchen cabinet doors and and hardware such as kitchen cabinet knobs and kitchen cabinet hinges so that you do not need to go shopping for them on your own.
