Step 1
Enlist help to prepare your home for guests. Think through chores you will need to get done and post a "To-Do" list on the fridge. The rule is, everyone needs to select a few chores. Even young children can pitch in. If you are an obsessive clean freak, use this opportunity to get your spring cleaning done. If not, just shovel out the main living areas, dim the lights, and don't offer any house tours.
-
Step 2
Encourage participation with the menu. When someone asks what they can bring, avoid the polite answer, "just yourself". Set a menu theme, (ie: Italian Night, Salad smorgesboard, finger foods etc.) and let guests join in the fun of putting together the spread. Everyone will feel part of making the evening a success, and the host won't be in a dissheveled heap on the floor when guests leave. It's easier on the pocketbook, too!
-
Step 3
Enjoy some crowd-friendly games. Games are great ways to bust stress, and span generationsl gaps. The purpose of any social evening is to get away from the arduous routines of life, and enjoy the company of friends. When the evening conversation develops into whining sessions about unfair bosses, or unruly children, the goals will not be realized. Dust off some of those old games such as Pictionary or Cranium, and outdo one another in making a fool out of yourself. The belly laughs will do more good than the best therapy sessions!
