Things You'll Need:
- Medical transcription equipment and software specified by your training program and/or work at home employer.
-
Step 1
Your first step is to understand exactly what a work at home medical transcriptionist does. People who work in the medical transcription field need to master the specialized language that doctors and other medical professionals use (including diagnostic language) so that they can transcribe doctors’ notes, patient progress reports, and other medical records with 100% accuracy. More specifically, doctors dictate their notes about their patients, and medical transcriptionists play back these recordings and must understand exactly what the doctors are saying (including all of the specialized medical language), and then transcribe the doctors’ dictated words into accurate medical records and patient files via word processing.
-
Step 2
To work at home in the medical transcription field you need excellent typing skills, good writing skills, including a solid understanding of grammar and spelling, diligence, perseverance, a willingness to proofread all of your work for accuracy, patience, and, once again, the ability to master the specialized medical language that doctors use.
-
Step 3
You can train on site at any local trade schools in your area that offer training in medical transcription. Alternatively, you can also train online or via correspondence. You will probably want to research both of these options to see which one would be the best choice for you. While researching training programs, you may want to read reviews from former students whenever possible. You may also want to find out what kind of job placement assistance each training program offers.
-
Step 4
To work at home in the medical transcription field, you should also be aware that you will need to purchase some special equipment. Your teachers in your medical transcription training program will be able to provide you with information about exactly which equipment and software you will need.
-
Step 5
No matter which medical transcription training program you ultimately choose, note that your training will involve a great deal of practice transcribing notes from actual doctors, and it is this continuous transcribing practice, more than anything else, that will enable you to hone your skills and build your confidence so that you will be ready to tackle an actual job in the medical transcription field once you have completed your training.
-
Step 6
Note that some (though not all) work at home companies that hire medical transcriptionists require you to have worked on site at a hospital or in a doctor’s office before they will consider hiring you to work at home in the medical transcription field.
