Bird watching takes on new meaning when you can enjoy these delightful and interesting creatures from the comfort of your home. You can easily build a window bird feeder with the right materials and a few instructions. These clear feeders invite the birds to dine in full view of your family for a continuous flow of activity and entertainment.

From Quick Guide: Bird Feeder Building Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Piece of Plexiglas, 12 inches by 6 inches
  • 2 Pieces of Plexiglas, 12 inches by 5 inches
  • 2 Strips of Plexiglas, 5 inches by 2 inches
  • 1 Strip of Plexiglas, 12 inches by 2 inches
  • Plexiglas glue
  • Gloves
  • 2 acrylic hooks
  • 2 strong suction cups with hooks
  1. Step 1

Purchase the Plexiglas and have it cut to size at your local home improvement store. Most stores will do this for you at no additional charge. The best way to cut plastic accurately is on a table saw with a carbide blade. The other method is by scoring it, then snapping it as you would glass, but tape the Plexiglas before you score it as it can be difficult to get a straight edge with the scoring tool because the plastic is slick.

  2. Step 2

Run a line of glue along the 12-inch edge of the 12-by-6 inch piece of Plexiglas and along the 12-inch edge of one of the 12-by-5 inch pieces of Plexiglas. Attach the two pieces together in an "L" shape and hold them securely in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions on the glue. Repeat this process with the remaining piece of 12-by-5 inch Plexiglas, attaching it to the other 12-inch side of your "L," creating a top and a bottom for your window feeder. Adding the top piece will help keep squirrels away from the food as well as giving the birds an additional place to perch.

  3. Step 3

Build the tray of your feeder by attaching the two strips of 5-by-2 inch Plexiglas to the sides of the bottom of the feeder and the 12-by-2 inch strip along the front of the bottom of the feeder.

  4. Step 4

Attach the two acrylic hooks to the back of your feeder where it will hang on the window. Attach the suction cups to the window and hang your bird feeder.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a one-way mirror to the back of the feeder if the birds in your neighborhood are shy or vain.
