How to Install an Exhaust Tip

There are four common types of exhaust tips that attach to tailpipes. The type of tip you choose will dictate how easy or challenging it is to apply. Read the directions or look at the tip's inlet to ascertain if you can attach the tip yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the exhaust tip's inlet. If dimples are present on the inlet end of the tip, pound the tip on gently with a rubber mallet until the outlet is flush with the outlet of the tailpipe. This type of tip is generally made of chrome, and is found on smaller tail pipes.

    • 2

Tighten the screws located on the inlet of the tip. Make sure the tip is centered before tightening the screws completely.

    • 3

If there is a slotted inlet on the tip, attach it to the tailpipe with a clamp. Tighten the clamp with a ratchet and socket.

    • 4

If there are no visible means to affix the tip to the tailpipe, weld the parts together. This will only work on steel or metal tips (a mig welder would damage a chrome tip).
