Composting kitchen waste not only makes good use of valuable nutrients by putting them back into the soil. It reduces the amount of trash from your kitchen too. Saving scraps of organic material like vegetable peels, cores and other unused vegetables and adding them to a kitchen compost bin will provide you with rich soil for all your garden.       Select a large bucket with a sealable lid. Place vegetable and fruit scraps in the bucket whenever you cook. Do not forget to throw in those left over cooked vegetables. As long as they do not contain fatty sauces, they are a great addition to compost. Seal the bucket as soon as you deposit new items. Empty the bucket into the outside compost bin on a daily basis.

      Purchase biodegradable compost bags to line a small wastebasket. This will hold your vegetable scraps throughout the day and can be added to the compost bin. These bags, designed to be added to the compost bin and break down into usable compost, provide a convenient way to collect kitchen scraps.

      Place a large plastic bowl or bucket in the freezer. Add scraps to the bowl throughout the day. Keeping them frozen eliminates odors and keeps them within easy reach without being visible. Empty the bowl into the compost bin when it becomes full. The frozen scraps melt and add organic matter to the compost pile.

      Add coffee grounds, egg shells and any other organic scraps. Take advantage of the compost bin when cleaning the refrigerator. Forgotten vegetables and shriveled fruit are prime for the compost bin. Avoid any meats or fatty foods.
