How to Plant Redbud Tree Seeds

Within a few years you can look forward to having the beautiful blossoms in your yard every spring. It is a very low maintenance tree that keeps its shape beautifully. The next time you see those long pods hanging down, collect a few and start your own redbud tree.

Things You'll Need

• Redbud seeds
• Sandpaper
• Plastic cups

Instructions

1. Remove the hard seeds from the seed pod's fleshy case. These are actually considered a legume and the plant is related to the pea family. Throw away the case and save the seeds.

2. Sand the seeds down until you can see that you have gone through the outer woody coating. Do each one individually to make sure they can germinate.

3. Put the seeds in a container of warm water so that they are covered. Soak them overnight or for about 12 hours. This will help make sure they are well hydrated.

4. Poke some holes in the bottoms of the plastic cups. Fill them with soil from under the redbud tree or any regular potting soil. Poke a 1-inch hole into the dirt and bury the seeds, one per cup.

5. Dig holes in your yard as large as the plastic cups. Place the cups in the holes and tamp the dirt around them to hold them in place. This is the simplest way for them to go through the cold time they need to germinate.

6. Let the seeds go through the winter and spring. You should see a sprout show up in the early spring. Pull the cup up and plant your new redbud seedling wherever you like. A redbud tree is a versatile plant just needing sun and well-drained soil.
