Cut a simple flower to make your own homemade paper note. The design can be complex if you have the artistic skills, but easy flower designs and patterns work well. After you make the basic flower note, you can decorate or make it as ornate as you like, depending on personal tastes and who you might be giving it to. The technique is easy enough for older kids to do, and younger ones can make these with some guidance.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper or Cardstock
  • Scrap Paper (optional)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • White Craft Glue (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Sequins (optional)
  1. Step 1

Fold a piece of paper or cardstock in half to make a folding note card. Make sure you score the fold with your finger nail or the side of a hard object, like a ruler or a pencil, to ensure a clean fold. You can make the note any size you like.

  2. Step 2

Draw a simple flower outline design on the front of the folded paper or cardstock. Draw the design lightly with the pencil. You don't need a heavy pencil pattern to follow, just a light outline. Make it dark enough to see when you are cutting it out. This is where a skilled artist can get really detailed, but simple designs work very nicely, too.

  3. Step 3

Cut all the way around the traced or drawn flower pattern with the paper folded in half so you are cutting through both pieces at the same time. Cut all except for one edge of a petal or side of the flower where the creased fold is. The one petal edge or side is the folding part of the note that keeps the front attached to the back. Make sure you keep one part together or you will end up with two separate pieces of paper instead of a folding note. Make sure you cut the flower inside the pencil lines. That way no pencil marks will end up on the finished flower note.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have some difficulty drawing, do some practice flowers on scrap paper first until you get one you like. Then cut it out and use it as a tracing pattern to put on the note itself to trace around. This technique works well with children, too. For more ornate flowers, try using fine paper cutting scissors to get petal detail. To make fancier flower notes, add decorator items to the front, like sequins or glitter, with white craft glue. Let the glue dry completely before you give the note.
