How to Stop Windows Installer From Popping Up

The older a computer gets, the more junk it accumulates. A great number of computers out there don't start up without a thousand things popping up demanding your attention. Windows Installer is one of the more notorious pop-up offenders for Microsoft users. Stopping these pop-ups can prove challenging, however, there is a way.

Things You'll Need

• Personal Computer
• Windows Operating System (XP, Vista, etc.)

Instructions

1. On your computer's desktop, click on the "Start" tab, typically located on the bottom left of the screen (in Vista it may be the Windows symbol rather than the word "Start").

2. Now locate and click the program titled "Run." Vista users can locate this program by typing "run" in the search box at the bottom of the "Start" menu.

3. Once "Run" is open, type "MSCONFIG" into the empty box and click "OK." This will open the System Configuration Utility.

4. With the System Configuration Utility open, select the tab labeled "Services."

5. Scroll down the list of services (it may be beneficial to click the "service" column to sort the services alphabetically) until you find the "Windows Installer" program.

6. Now click the check box beside the Windows Installer name and click the "Disable" button at the bottom of the System Configuration. Congratulations, you have stopped "Windows Installer" from popping up!

Tips & Warnings

• If these steps do not work, you should contact the Microsoft help line for further assistance. Also, this only disables the Windows Installer from popping up on your computer automatically. If you wish to delete this program, you should seek further assistance.
