Hair extensions are often treated with chemicals to make them stronger and more durable. As a result, they can be dry and tough to the touch, not soft or silky. However, you can make them softer, shinier---the kind of hair you can run your fingers through---by using both homemade and store-bought hair conditioners. You can apply these remedies both before and after the extensions have been placed in your hair; the conditioning treatments will work in both cases.
Things You'll Need
- Deep conditioner
- Hot oil treatment
- Plain yogurt
- Avocado oil
- Virgin olive oil
Soak your hair extensions in warm water for 30 minutes to an hour. The warm water will soften the strands, making them easier to style.
Make a hot oil treatment using olive oil and avocado oil. Combine a few teaspoons of the oils, then place in a glass jar or cup. Place the cup in a hot water bath to heat the oils. Wet the extensions and massage a hot oil treatment into them. Leave the treatment in the extensions for about 30 minutes then rinse them out with warm water.
Use a deep conditioning treatment to soften the hair extensions. Apply the conditioner to slightly dampened extensions, leave it in for about 10 minutes then rinse off.
Make a deep conditioning mask with avocado and yogurt, and apply it to the hair extensions. Mash up a ripe avocado and mix it in with 2 tbsp. yogurt, blending well. Apply the mask all over the hair extensions, leave it in for about 15 minutes. Remove the mask and dump out into a trash receptacle then rinse out the extensions with shampoo.
Apply a mixture of honey and olive oil to soften the hair extensions. You will need about 2 tbsp. honey and olive oil. Mix them together in a plastic bowl then apply to the hair extensions. Massage it in to really make the extensions soft, then rinse them out with warm water.
