1
Make a list of what you need. Before you go to the store to purchase the emergency disaster supplies it is a good idea to know what you need. The United States government has established the Ready America website to teach people how to create a disaster supply kit and what to include. You can find an entire list of items you need by visiting the website.

2
Consider the unique needs of your family. While the government's website lists water, food and dust masks as things everyone should include, there may be things that pertain only to a small segment of the population or just your family. For families with infants, the emergency disaster supplies will need to contain diapers while those with pets will need to include pet food and any medicine their pets may be on in their supplies.

Find a safe, dry place to store the supplies. Many people find it useful to put their emergency disaster supplies in a large container that has a lid. Just make sure that wherever you choose to put yours that no moisture or humidity can damage any of the supplies.

Check the supplies periodically and update as needed. Every six months you should check your stock of emergency disaster supplies. Food or water that has an expiration date within the next six months should be replaced by new food and the same is true for any medicine. In addition, take time to reflect on how your family has changed in the last six months and what additions or subtractions can be made based on these changes. For example, six months after creating your disaster supply kit your baby may no longer be in diapers, so you can remove them from the kit.
