Ink jet printers are economical additions to the home office. Canon is one popular brand of ink jet printer found in many homes and small offices. It's important to know how to replace the ink cartridges in your printer. Each printer will vary a little, but the basics are the same. Just read the documentation that comes with your printer for the details.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Canon inkjet printer
  • Replacement cartridge(s)
  1. Step 1

    Turn the printer on.

  2. Step 2

Open the lid of the printer that reveals the ink cartridges. In a moment, the cartridge carriage will move to the center of the printer, allowing access to the cartridges.

  3. Step 3

Pull the cartridge to be replaced toward you until it releases from the cradle. Note the direction and manner in which you are doing this so you can insert the new cartridge in the same way.

  4. Step 4

Remove the packaging and any tape from the new cartridge.

  5. Step 5

Position the new cartridge in the cradle in the same position the old one was removed. Press downward gently until you feel it click. Don't force it. Repeat the steps for any other cartridges that need replacing.

  6. Step 6

Close the lid of the printer. You will hear the cartridge cradle move. The printer may automatically print a test page; otherwise, print a test page yourself to ensure everything is seated correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) cartridges are not essential to your printer's performance, and using aftermarket cartridges will not void your warranty. Aftermarket cartridges are often less expensive and just as reliable as OEMs.
