Sinus pillows may look like oversized eye patches, but they are actually well-designed products for the treatment of sinus pain and pressure. The pillows are filled with a base such as rice or flaxseed. As the pillow lays across the face, the rice or flaxseed applies accupressure to the sinuses. Along with the base, there are many herbs and spices that can be in the pillow. Herbs such as basil, peppermint, sage, marjoram, thyme and eucalyptus are often added to the pillow for an aromatherapy effect.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the sinus pillow in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds. The heat stimulates the aroma from the herbs that open the sinus passages. The heated pressure will also stimulate the clogged sinus passages to drain.

  2. Step 2

Remove the pillow from the microwave, and lay down in a comfortable, relaxing area.

  3. Step 3

Place the sinus pillow across the eyes and over the upper cheek area. This allows the weight to act as pressure on the sinus pressure points, stimulating the sinus passages.

  4. Step 4

Breathe deeply, inhaling the aroma from the heated pillow for 30 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Store the sinus pillow in the refrigerator when finished. The sinus pillow can also be used cold to refresh tired eyes and reduce the inflammation caused by sinus pressure. Lie down and follow Steps 3 and 4 to use the pillow cold.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pick up more than one sinus pillow, since there are many different herbal blends available.
  • Do not overheat the sinus pillow, or you risk causing burns to your pillow and your skin. If your sinus pain and pressure persists more than 1 week, see your physician.

on 10/16/2009 I always though that heat on your eyes was not necessarily good. What I do is use a peppermint eye pillow, right out of the freezer. The cold flax seed soothe my puffy eyes and swollen sinus cavities. The peppermint scent opens up my sinuses to help relieve some pressure. Then I use a netti pot to clean out the sinuses. I then put the eye pillow back on to relax and calm my temples down. I got the aromatherapy eye pillow from A Touch Of Satin. They are fantastic. I went to CVS to get my netti pot. This will help you!
