How to Use a Walking Cane

Certain individuals who are injured in one way or another may not be able to walk without assistance while recovering from the injury. Instead of using a wheelchair, the person may decide to use a walking cane in order to avoid being confined in a chair. While using a walking cane may look very easy, it actually can be a big adjustment. By using these tips, you can use a walking cane without too much difficulty.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the walking cane in the hand that is on the non-injured side of your body. In other words, if your left hip is injured, you should hold the cane with your right hand.

    • 2

Put the walking cane forward when you take a step using the injured side of your body. The cane should begin going forward as you begin taking the step.

    • 3

Set the cane at the same distance in front of you as your opposite leg will be when you take a step. In other words, if your left leg will advance 1 foot ahead, the cane in your right hand should go 1 foot ahead.

    • 4

Make sure that the walking cane hits the ground at the exact same time that the foot on the injured side of your body touches the ground. This will alleviate excess pressure and stress on that side of the body.

    • 5

Put as much of your body weight on the cane as you need to when taking a step. How much you lean on the cane will be dependent on how weak the injured side of your body is when using the walking cane.
