How to Braid a Loop in Nylon Rope

Nylon rope is popular because of its strength. When stretched, it will return to original length, making it ideal for absorbing shock loads when towing or lifting. Nylon also resists deterioration from the UV rays of the sun. Loops braided into the nylon rope make for efficient tie down and are easily achieved with the use of a pin made of metal or wood. This pin is called a fid and is available in a variety of sizes.

Instructions

    • 1

      Light the match.

    • 2

Prevent the rope from unraveling by holding one end over the match flame until it melts.

    • 3

Insert the melted edge into the fid (see Resources).

    • 4

Calculate the size of the loop needed and add 6 inches.

    • 5

Mark the nylon rope at the calculated distance from the singed end.

    • 6

Insert the fid into the layers of rope at the mark.

    • 7

Work the fid downward 6 inches through the center of rope.

    • 8

Push the fid up through the layers of rope until it is fully exposed.

    • 9

Remove the fid from the rope. If the melted end of the rope is exposed, just tuck it back in.

    • 10

Grasp the bottom of the loop and the part of the rope at the point you removed the fid.

    • 11

Gently tug the rope several times to tighten the splice.

    • 12

Smooth the splice by running it through your fingers.
