How to Mop Laminate Floors

Mopping laminate flooring generally requires less effort (and less water) than some other types of flooring--especially vinyl tile or linoleum. However, you must use the right kinds of cleaners, or you may end up dulling the finish. Cleaners manufactured specifically for laminate and some simple home-made cleaners can help keep laminate looking better longer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep floor thoroughly with a clean dust mop. Make sure to sweep all corners and wall edges well; otherwise, the dirt and grime may be loosened by the moisture during mopping and make the task longer than necessary.

    • 2

Pour warm water into a clean mop bucket. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of white vinegar with the water. Stir thoroughly.

    • 3

Place the sponge mop into the bucket of cleaning solution. Make sure you squeeze out all excess solution from the mop before placing it on the floor.

    • 4

Mop small sections of the floor at a time, in the direction of the laminate pattern. Immerse the sponge mop in the bucket to rinse excess dirt off after each section. Alternatively, if you want to keep your mop water cleaner, rinse the mop head under a faucet.

    • 5

Dry the floor with clean, soft towels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of a sponge mop or towels to mop and dry your floor, you can use microfiber mops. Microfiber is soft enough that it won't scuff flooring, and it can be used wet or dry.

  • Do not use too much water on your laminate and do not allow water to stand. Doing so may cause laminate to warp or buckle.
