Grow Moon Flowers

Magical, mystical moonflowers never fail to delight. These fragrant flowers open up at night, and provide a beautiful backdrop for a garden during the day. Moonflowers are actually vining plants that feature 4- to 6-inch white or pink flowers, and grow well on a trellis or next to a fence. They are easy to grow and can get as high as 12 to 18 feet within a year. You will be amazed to see how the flowers open at night and close at the first sign of sunrise. These plants are not very susceptible to bugs or disease.

Things You'll Need:

  • Moonflower seeds
  • Mulch
  • Trellis

    Grow Moonflowers

  1. Step 1

Plant moonflower seeds directly in the garden. Moonflowers like direct sun, and need a trellis or fence to climb. Make sure there is no threat of frost before planting.

  2. Step 2

Cover seeds with 1/4-inch of soil. Moonflowers are hardy, and not real picky about their soil. You do not have fertilize them at this point.

  3. Step 3

Water thoroughly after planting seeds, and at regular intervals thereafter. You should start to see seedlings breaking through the ground in about two to three weeks.

  4. Step 4

Thin the plants out to one every 6 inches, and add mulch around the plants. This will prevent weeds from growing and strangling young moonflowers.

  5. Step 5

Moonflowers do well in poor and dry soil. Therefore, do not over-water. There is no need for pruning, and use an environmentally safe insecticide only if you see bugs.
