1
Take pictures before you are fully dressed and ready. Half of the excitement of prom is getting dressed up for it. Take photos as you are getting ready.
-
2
Use natural light when you can. A flash can fill in light when the situation requires, but artificial light never offers the optimal quality that sunlight does. Open the curtains and let the sunlight in.

3
Go candid. All night long, people are going to be asking you to pose for a photograph, including the professional photographer that your school will likely hire to take your picture as you walk in. Take your own pictures when people aren't posing, and you will capture memories better.
-
4
Use your flash in low light. Prom committees like to turn the lights down, which works for ambiance but doesn't do much for photographic quality. Unless you have a super slow shutter speed on your camera and a perfectly still subject, taking photos in a dim room will be too dark without a flash.

5
Take pictures with your friends, not just your date. There is a tendency to photograph prom-goers only with their date for the evening. You'll miss those photos with your friends if you forget to take them.
