Things You'll Need:
- Flat sheet
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- 1/4-inch elastic, at least 40 inches
-
Step 1
Measure the length, width and depth of your bed.
-
Step 2
Add the depth, (usually about 6 inches) to the length and width measurements, so your fitted sheet will fold under the mattress.
-
Step 3
Spread out the flat sheet and mark your measurements on it. You may or may not need to trim excess. If you don't trim, you won't have to finish or hem edges.
-
Step 4
Lay the flat sheet across your mattress, right side down. Pinch all four corners out, so they form four equal triangles.
-
Step 5
Pin the triangles in line with your mattress corner.
-
Step 6
Trim all four corners 1/2 inch from where you pinned them, then zig zag stitch the raw edge.
-
Step 7
Turn the edge under 1/4 inch two times, then hem with a straight stitch.
-
Step 1
Pin one, 10-inch piece of elastic on the wrong side of the bottom hem. Center it with the dart.
-
Step 2
Stretch the elastic as much as possible while sewing it onto the fabric. Use a zig zag stitch or stretch stitch.
-
Step 3
Repeat Step 1 and 2 on all four corners.
-
Step 4
If you like, you can instead place the elastic inside the bottom hem by pulling a few stitches out on the side hem.
-
Step 5
Feed the elastic through the hemline, then stitch the open section and elastic into place.
-
Step 6
Stretch the elastic while you sew. This method requires more patience.
