Cats can contract fleas just as easily as dogs. The fleas will not only bother your cat and cause it to scratch itself constantly, but the fleas will also bother you. They can bite you and cause little red bumps that itch. You will want to get rid of them. It is best to remove them naturally, especially if you have small children in the home that you do not want to subject to harsh chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a flea comb. This is necessary to remove the fleas from the cat. The teeth are smaller than a regular comb and equipped to get the fleas and their eggs out of your cat's fur. Dip the flea comb into a dish of soapy water. Run through the cat's fur one section at a time. Wipe on to a paper towel and then repeat.

Run some lukewarm bath water. As the water runs, pour in three tablespoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid and five drops of citrus extract. Lather up your cat with this mixture and keep the cat wet for five minutes. Rinse the soap off and towel dry the cat. The fleas will die in the soapy water so your cat will then be flea free.

Buy some cedar shavings and gather some pine needles. Throw them around your house and your yard. This will keep the fleas away because the fleas hate the odors emitted by the cedar shavings and pine needles.

    • 4

Set up your own homemade flea traps. Place a bowl of soapy water under a night light. The fleas will jump toward the light that is attracting them and then fall in to the soapy water. They won't be able to get out and will die within minutes.

    • 5

Use salt to kill the fleas on your carpets. Dump the salt liberally all over your carpet before you go to bed at night. The salt will damage the fleas outer shell and they will die. In the morning you will need to vacuum up the salt and the dead fleas.

Spray your cat with a homemade flea spray. Fill a spray bottle with water. Make sure you have a small amount of space to add four drops of lavender oil and four drops of cedar wood oil. Spray on your cat every 6 hours for one week. This will kill the fleas and any eggs that hatch.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble giving your cat a bath, take the Dawn dish soap and Citrus extract to a cat groomer. Pay them to give the cat the treatment.

  • Be sure to completely wash your cat's toys and any cat beds that you have. Otherwise the fleas will just jump back on your cat and you will have the same problem all over again.
