How to Make a Hot Toddy With Whiskey

Hot toddy is a comforting drink.

Whether it's the middle of the winter and you're wanting something warm or you're suffering from a miserable cold, a hot toddy with whiskey is inviting. It won't cure your cold, but the drink comforts a sore throat and tastes great. There are many recipes for a hot toddy. Some use brandy, some use whiskey. Some are made with tea, and some are made with honey and water. Whatever you prefer, the basic ingredients will make an inviting drink to help you relax after a hard day or help you survive a cold.

Things You'll Need

• 1 1/2 ounces whiskey
• 1 to 2 tsp. honey
• 2 to 3 oz. boiling water
• Lemon wedge
• Cinnamon stick
• Nutmeg
• Tea (optional)

How to Make a Hot Toddy with Whiskey

1. Pour boiling water into a mug. Add honey and stir to dissolve. Add whiskey and stir.

2. Squeeze lemon juice into the mixture and then add the lemon wedge. If you don't have a lemon wedge, try a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice.

3. Stir with a cinnamon stick and let set for a few minutes before sprinkling on some nutmeg. The hot toddy is ready to drink.

How to Make a Hot Toddy with Tea and Whiskey

1. Make the toddy with the optional tea. For a different hot toddy, start with a tea bag and add 2 to 3 oz. boiling water. Let the tea steep for 3 minutes and then remove the tea bag.

2. Add the honey and stir to dissolve it. Add the whiskey and stir. Squeeze in some juice from the wedge of lemon and then add the lemon.

3. Stir with a cinnamon stick. Let the toddy set for a few minutes to enhance the flavors and to cool slightly. Add a sprinkle of nutmeg and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

• Try brandy or rum instead of the whiskey. Add a couple of cloves for flavor. Try green tea instead of black tea. Use coffee instead of water or tea.

• Don't combine a hot toddy with any flu or cold medications. Don't drive after drinking a hot toddy.
