How to Become a Plus-Size Model

  1. Step 1

Research the modeling industry and requirements for becoming a plus-size model. Although there are exceptions to the rules, plus-size models are usually between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall. Sizes vary anywhere between size 8 and 28.

  2. Step 2

Take quality photographs to send to agencies. These photographs do not have to be professional. If an agency is interested in you, it will provide photographs and comp/zed cards as well. In order to start your career, you must have quality snapshots--one of your face and the other of your full body. Be sure that you are in casual clothing and are only in front of a plain wall. Also, make sure that no other people or props are in your photo. Your makeup should be as natural as possible. Agencies want to see your natural beauty.

  3. Step 3

Find reputable agencies to which to send your photos. Researching agencies is imperative to your success as a plus-size model. Make sure that the agency is legitimate and will work for your best interest. If an agency is asking you for money up front, chances are it is not credible. As a model of any size, you should never have to pay anyone any money to represent you.

  4. Step 4

Attend open model calls and networking opportunities, either locally or nationally. You never know who you will run into.

  5. Step 5

Keep yourself well-groomed. Plus-size models, like straight models, are expected to have nice smiles and proportionate figures. Exercising, eating healthy and practicing good hygiene will keep your skin, hair and nails up to par.

  6. Step 6

Participate in local fashion shows and other plus-size industry events. This will help to build your resume and add to your credibility. Even if you are unrepresented, you should get involved in as many activities as possible that will give you experience modeling.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are different types of plus-size models. High fashion may not be everyone's cup of tea. Commercial, print and fit modeling are just a few other types of modeling that may be of interest.
  • Starting a career in plus-modeling is difficult but rewarding. Persistence in this business is key. Modeling as a full-time career is extremely difficult. Although you have to open up your schedule for modeling gigs, coupling this with another job works best.
