Step 1
Set up the enema. This includes hanging the enema bag between 1 and a half to two feet over your rectum, and preparing the enema solution. You will want the solution to be around 105 degrees (Farenheit) at the time of the enema. If you give yourself a soap suds enema, do not use dish soap as this may irritate your colon.
-
Step 2
Expel the air from the enema hose. Once the hose is hooked up to the bag, open the valve for a few seconds to get all of the air out, as this will help reduce cramping.
-
Step 3
Lubricate. You will want to use KY jelly or vaseline both on your rectum and on the rectal nozzle.
-
Step 4
Give yourself the enema. Lie down on your stomach and insert the rectal nozzle a few inches into your rectum. Open up the valve and allow the enema solution to go down into your colon.
-
Step 5
Shut off the valve. Once the enema bag is empty, close the valve and lay still for a few minutes to hold the enema solution in. Then, when you are done, carefully, remove the rectal nozzle and go to the bathroom to release the enema.

Step 6
Clean and dry. Make sure you thoroughly clean all of the equipment and then hang it out to dry, which may require several days.
