Place a small but sturdy steel cage in the attic. Squirrels die easily from heat exhaustion, so place the cage in area that is well-shaded from sunlight. You don't want to have to handle dead squirrels.

Cover the cage with heavy cloth to further eliminate the chances of heat exhaustion, but make sure that the opening is clear and accessible. Place bait, such as leaves or a dish of water, in the cage.

Leave the cage and wait. Check periodically to see if a squirrel has been trapped. Change the bait if necessary.

Once you've trapped the squirrel, remove the cage and take it outdoors. Open the cage and allow the squirrel to escape.

Once the rodent is removed, identify the entryway in the attic and seal it. This won't necessarily prevent more infestations, but it will be the most effective step in preventing another break-in.
