How to Remove Mold From Caulking

If one does not stay on top of cleaning in the bathroom or kitchen, it is not unusual for a black mold to begin to appear on the caulking around kitchen or bathroom sinks and/or tubs and showers. While this mold is unsightly and typically resistant to standard cleaning supplies, it is possible to occasionally rid yourself of it without having to resort to a full re-caulking. (If you must engage in a full re-caulking, as is often the case, it is advised that you use a mold-resistant caulk.) Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by washing the area with soapy water and a sponge to loosen any mold that may be knocked loose with a preliminary scrubbing. Dry the area thoroughly with your towel before moving on to the next step.

    • 2

Using either a spray bottle of undiluted bleach or a bleach pen, liberally apply bleach to the affected area and allow to sit for 10 or so minutes. The bleach will kill the mold and begin to lighten the caulk.

    • 3

Apply your stiff bristled brush to the bleach-soaked caulk. Rub vigorously from side to side, but do not apply so much pressure that you dislodge the caulk. Once you have completely scrubbed the area, rinse with clean cold water and towel dry.

    • 4

Using your other spray bottle, add undiluted white vinegar. Do not dilute with water, and do not mix with bleach. Spray the caulking liberally with the vinegar after each exposure to moisture (i.e. bath or shower) to inhibit the growth of new mold. Monitor the area closely, as surface mold is often indicative of a greater moisture problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • If using bleach, you may wish to wear old clothing to prevent damage. A toothbrush is sometimes the best brush for cleaning caulking, though not the only option.

  • Do not mix bleach with any other cleaning solution.
