How to Climb the Rope in Gym Class
Most schools require their students during gym class to climb up a rope and touch the flag at the top. The purpose of this exercise is to build upper body strength in the students. It also teaches persistence. If students are finding themselves unsuccessful at climbing the rope, they may want to read these instructions to understand the task one step at a time.
Instructions

1
Position yourself directly in front of the rope.
-
2
Reach your arms up and grab the rope. You want to have your dominant hand above the other. For example, if you normally use your right hand, your right hand will be just above your left hand on the rope.

-
3
Jump up at the same time that you use your arms to pull yourself up.
-
4
Bend your knees as you jump up and wrap your feet around the rope. This will keep you from falling back down and give you a starting point to climb higher.
-
5
Stand up from the position of your feet and extend your arms to grab the rope above you. Again have your dominant hand on top of the other.
-
6
Let go with your feet as you grab the rope again and bend your knees, wrapping your feet around the rope in a new, higher spot.
-
7
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you get to the top of the rope. Tag the flag at the top if that is a requirement for your gym class.

Tips & Warnings
Find a gym that will allow you to practice on its rope so that you can master this before you get to gym class.
If you still cannot get up the rope, you may need a personal trainer to work with you on developing upper body strength.
