Instructions

  1. From Land

    • 1

Find a beach or stretch of grass near the water to get into your kayak on land.

    • 2

Step into your kayak and sit down on the seat while pushing out your legs in front of you.

    • 3

Use your hands to push off the ground and make your way into the water. Don't forget to bring your paddle with you.

    In the Water

    • 4

Find a calm area in shallow water to get into your kayak while already in the water.

    • 5

Slide your kayak into the water, front first. Keep a hand on the back to steady it.

    • 6

Stand next to the kayak with your paddle in one hand while stabilizing the kayak with your other hand.

    • 7

Place your paddle perpendicular to the boat against the back rim of the cockpit. Push it just behind your seat.

    • 8

Use your closest hand and place it on the paddle.

    • 9

Stabilize the kayak and keep it from rocking or drifting away with your other hand.

    • 10

Put one leg into the kayak and shift your weight over the kayak. Keep your other foot firmly on the ground.

    • 11

Sit down on the back of the kayak's cockpit and pull your other leg inside.

    • 12

Slide down into the seat and push your legs forward.

    From Deep Water

    • 13

Swim to the kayak when it's tipped over in deep water. Reach across it and grab onto the opposite side.

    • 14

Bend your knees near the side of the kayak and lean back until it flips over.

    • 15

Hold onto the side of your kayak while your feet float to the surface and keep your head near the cockpit.

    • 16

Pull yourself onto the kayak and work your backside into the seat.

    • 17

Regain your balance and sit upright, pushing your legs forward.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are getting into the kayak on land, make sure there are no rocks and seashells that can scratch your kayak. Flip your kayak and practice getting in and out of it in shallow water. Do not attempt to try it your first time in an emergency situation or during choppy conditions.

  • Wear a helmet and life jacket while kayaking and avoid going out alone.
