How to Wear a Tuxedo Collar

Few looks are as classic or enduring as the tuxedo. Since most men at one point or another will wear this ensemble during a special event, knowing the elements that create the look is key. A classic tux cannot be worn correctly without a collared shirt, found in tuxedo shops and department stores.

Step 1

Choose which type of tuxedo collar you want to wear. The most popular tuxedo collars today are wing-tipped styles, with a wing-like band collar with two small down-facing points, and the lay-down collar with larger, folded down points. Both types of collars are equally appropriate for formal events, and selecting one over the other is simply a matter of personal style and comfort preferences, much like the choice between boxers or briefs.
Step 2

Try the shirt on for size, making sure the fit of the collar is right. There should be enough room in the neck that you feel comfortable in the shirt with the collar fully buttoned up.
Step 3

After choosing your shirt collar, put on the neck or bow tie you plan to wear with the tuxedo. A regular tie should fit snugly around the collar and both points should be folded down and visible. A bow tie should also fit closely around the collar, and the points of the collar should be folded over the band and tucked under the bow for a flattering and classic look.

Tips & Warnings

If the tuxedo shirt collars mentioned are not for you and you seek a less conventional look, try the mandarin-collared tux shirt. This newer style lacks the traditional wingtip or fold-down collar and makes wearing the collar effortless. For black-tie events, make sure to accentuate your tuxedo collar with just that - a black bow or necktie. Red, blue, purple, or any other color tie simply will not do for these types of formal occasions and can take away from the inherently flattering aspects of a tuxedo.
Do not wear clip-on bow ties with your tuxedo shirt collar. Learn how to tie one yourself and ask a formal wear sales assistant for help if necessary. Do not leave your tuxedo collar up and unfolded, as this can create a bizarre and unkempt look. Vampire chic is only acceptable on Halloween - on the other 364 days of the year, steer away from it.
