How to Make Camp Fire Starters with Wax Paraffin
Used paraffin wax left over from burnt out candles or candle drippings may seem like garbage, but when combined with sawdust it can be used to create a simply and effective homemade fire starter. Sawdust and wax fire starters can be used to create fires in fireplaces or camp fires with larger logs without the need for newspaper and kindling. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Paraffin wax
- Sawdust
- Heat source (Stove)
- Large pot
- Smaller throwaway metal container (Coffee can)
- Water
- * A cupcake tray
Instructions
-
-
1
Fill the large pot with a couple inches of water and bring it to a boil.
-
2
Place paraffin wax in the smaller metal container, and place the smaller container inside the pot, so that the boiling water transfers heat and melts the wax.
-
-
3
Mix sawdust into the melted wax. Mix the wax and sawdust in about a 50/50 ratio, so each cup of wax is mixed with one cup of sawdust.
-
4
Pour or scoop the wax and sawdust mixture into a cupcake pan or other uniform mold. You may want to cover the mold first with tissue so that the wax does not stick to it.
-
5
Wait for the fire starters to cool, then pop them out of the mold. To use, simply light the starter with a match or lighter to produce a flame which will last several minutes.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of using a mold to shape the fire starters you can dab globs of the wax and sawdust squares of paper, then wrap the paper around them to create balls.
