Make a Metal and Wire Wreath

A wreath is a festive piece of décor, but sometimes it may begin to look all the same. You can change that fact when you hook up a wreath made entirely of metal and mesh. You can make a generic metal and mesh wreath that stays on your door permanently and even spruce it up with seasonal bows, ribbon and magnets when different holidays hit.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your materials. Visit the local craft or hardware store, home supply shop or salvage yard to select your materials. Pick a flat circle shape with a base that is at least 2 inches wide and miscellaneous metal and mesh pieces to adorn the base.

    • 2

Prepare your materials. Hose down or wipe off your pieces to remove any dust and debris. Allow to dry. Use snips to cut both your metal and mesh into shapes and sizes you want to include on your wreath. Make sure to leave little tabs on the end of your metal and mesh so they can be attached to the base. You may want to sketch out your shapes on the metal with a water-based marker before you cut them.

    • 3

Wire the metal to the base. Take the tab on each piece of metal you prepared and bend it around the circular base. Repeat until you have used all the metal pieces you desire.

    • 4

Add mesh pieces. Fill in any gaps with the mesh. Bend the tabs of the thicker mesh into place as you did for the metal. Finer mesh pieces can be attached to the base by threading a piece of wire through the mesh and around the base.

Finish it off. You can leave the metal and mesh au natural or spray paint it an array of decorative colors. You can also use paint markers to add fine details. Seal the finished product with polyurethane or another sealant to prevent rust if you are going to place the wreath outside.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot find a good base, you can always use an artificial Christmas wreath base by cutting off all the greenery.

  • Metal, mesh and wire are sharp. Wear protective gloves to protect your hands.
