How to Paint Antique Faux Finishes

You can make your walls look any way you want, just by the way you apply the paint finishes. A very popular style of painting makes new walls and surfaces look antique or aged. There are many different ideas and color shades available for your antique faux finish. For a two-tone effect such as the one in this article, use a lighter shade of flat paint for your base coat and a darker shade or different color for the finish coat.
Or, give your room the feel of an old Western cabin or a Spanish adobe home. Maybe you prefer a classic Roman feel or a rugged stone design. Whatever your style or taste, you can display it by learning to paint with an antique faux finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet down a clean cloth and wash the surface of your wall to remove all dirt and dust before you apply your antique faux finish. Allow the wall to dry completely before applying any paint.

    • 2

Lay a drop cloth on the floor along the wall you will be working on. Mask off any wood baseboards or areas that you don't want the paint on.

    • 3

Pour the flat paint into a paint pan.

    • 4

Apply a flat paint for a base coat on your wall with a paint roller and brush, to prepare the wall and seal the existing paint color from bleeding through. If necessary, apply a second coat of flat paint and be careful to cover the entire wall.

    • 5

Allow your base coat to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the texture coat.

    • 6

Clean out your paint pan and then pour a semi-gloss paint into the pan.

    • 7

Using your large sponge, dab it into the paint in the pan. Then apply the semi-gloss paint to the wall by dabbing it onto the wall and create a textured effect. Continue this pattern until you have covered the entire wall.

    • 8

Allow the paint to dry and then remove the masking paper and tape. Repeat this process for any additional walls that you would like to have painted in an antique faux finish.
