How to Change the Memory in a Toshiba Laptop

One of the best and easiest ways to improve the performance and extend the useful life of any laptop computer is to add or upgrade the memory. Random Access Memory (RAM) is a relatively inexpensive upgrade, and usually a reasonably easy one as well. While some laptops have a memory compartment underneath the keyboard, which is difficult to access, most Toshibas have at least one easily accessible compartment on the bottom; sometimes both RAM chips are located in this slot.

Things You'll Need

  • Extra RAM chip
  • Screwdriver (type will depend on laptop's screws)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the computer. Unplug it and remove the battery from the computer.

    • 2

Locate the memory compartment and remove the panel. The location and size of the panel will vary depending on the Toshiba model, but your user manual should offer information on the specifics.

    • 3
Spring-loaded clips hold RAM in place in most laptops

Remove the existing RAM chip by gently pulling aside the silver, spring-loaded clips that hold it in. Once the clips are pulled aside, the chip should spring up at a 45-degree angle.

    • 4

Gently pull out the old RAM chip, noting exactly how it was seated. Insert the new chip the same way, at a 45-degree angle.

    • 5

Press down gently on the RAM. It should click into place under the clips. If either clip doesn't hold the chip firmly, press gently until the clips click into place. Repeat the process if you are replacing a second RAM chip.

    • 6

Replace the cover on the memory compartment and replace the screws. Turn the computer on.

    • 7
The amount of RAM, circled, in the "General" screen under "My Computer"

Test to make sure the computer recognizes the RAM by going to Start>My Computer, and right-clicking "My Computer." On the "General" screen you will see the amount of RAM in your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • The amount of RAM reflected in System Properties may be slightly less than the amount installed; for example, 1.99 GB instead of 2 GB. This is normal and should not affect performance. Windows can only utilize a finite amount of RAM. The 32-bit version of Vista, for example, can only read 4 GB of RAM, so even if your computer can take more, it will not be used by the system. Consult your Toshiba manual for specific instructions related to your system.
