How to Insert a Canon PG 40 Ink Cartridge

Canon's PG 40 cartridge is a black inkjet cartridge used in several of its Pixma printers, including the iP and MP models. It is smaller than Canon's older model cartridges and very similar to the newer Hewlett Packard style of cartridges. Because of this, inserting the cartridge into a compliant Canon printer is the same as with HP printers and very easy. When you open up the printer lid, the ink compartments come to you. The printer will also need its color ink cartridge to go with the PG 40 black one.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the lid on the Canon printer. The ink cartridges are usually stored within the printer on the far right. When you open it, they should slide on a conveyer belt all the way to the left end.

    • 2

Observe the two cartridge compartments within the printer. They should be labeled. The "B" compartment is for the black ink cartridge, which is the one you need (the "C" compartment is for the color cartridge). If they aren't labeled, check the printer manual for positioning. The black compartment is usually on the left.

    • 3

Hold the PG 40 cartridge so the back end (the taller of the two) is facing you. The print head is on the underside of this end. The label in the top of the cartridge should be upside down from your point of view.

    • 4

Insert the cartridge into the "B" compartment, aiming it towards the printer opening and slightly downward, until it settles into the shallow recess at the bottom of the compartment. Give it one more small push into the printer until you feel it "snap" into position.

    • 5

Close the printer after inserting the PG 40 cartridge and the color cartridge that goes with it (likely the CL 41). The cartridges will slide back into position and the printer is ready for printing.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the cartridge, grasp it by the back end, pull it up and away from the printer until it "snaps" out of place and take it out of its compartment.
